Review: The Relapse Symphony, “Shadows”
Review by: Josh Weisner
I have been following this band since I saw them on the Bad Blood Tour in 2013 with Blood On The Dance Floor; I immediately fell in love with their sound. WIth lineup changes (Alex Foxx moving to drums and the addition of Ray Miller on lead guitar) the band certainly put together a stellar first full-length album.
There honestly isn’t one bad track on “Shadows” and the combination of all of these musicians is a seriously killer group. The harmonizing guitars along with the fast leads and guitar licks on “Savage Eyes” and the title track “Shadows” are flawless. And having Brandon Kile on bass is a blessing, this guy kills it! Listen to his bass licks on “Savage Eyes”, “Forever Slowly”, and “Shadows”.
I could sit here and rant and rave all day about Bret Von Dehl’s vocals but two words can sum them up; unique and perfect. His rocker bad boy image fits his part so well. He is edgy, but his voice is so perfect for the hard rock he plays. Lyrically “Shadows” has so much to offer with feel good songs like “Savage Eyes”, “Walls”, and a re-recorded version (which I was so excited this song made the cut) of one of my favorite songs “Make Your Move”. The band also displays a sensitive side with songs such as “One More Yesterday” and “Forever Slowly”.
I have seriously had this album on repeat with good reason. This band is what modern rock and roll is about; having a shitload of fun, sounding awesome, and looking like badasses doing it all. This is by far my favorite release of 2014 so far and I can’t wait to hear more from them. Pick up their EP “Time Running Out” and their debut full-length “Shadows”; I promise you won’t be disappointed. Also, check out our “Flashback Friday” feature we did with vocalist Bret Von Dehl and see them on the Shapeshiftour with The Dead Rabbitts (Escape the Fate’s Craig Mabbitt and TJ Bell). Great release guys! I give this a 6 out of 5 stars! Keep on rocking!!
