Press Play: The Obsessives
Written by Joel Funk
The Obsessives are raw and unfiltered, emotional and honest. There’s a charm to the music that, when paired with those qualities, will keep pulling you back to them. For example, those first blistering and shaky seconds of “Malcolm Doesn’t Get It” were enough to keep me interested in hearing the rest of ‘Manners.’ To me, ‘Manners’ has the same feeling that The Front Bottoms’ self-titled record does. The vocals are just shaky enough to either make the listener fall head-over-heels in love or make them uncomfortable. Not because they’re bad, but because it’s not something that they’re used too. There’s not a layer of polish on top of the vocals – what you hear is what you get. And I’m willing to put money on the fact that what you hear is enough to make a fan out of you. You can listen to ‘Manners’ in full after the cut, and be sure to keep an ear to the ground for a new full-length coming this fall through Near Mint Records.
