Mid-Year Highlights

Posted 4 months ago by Joel Funk

This is an import directly from my personal Facebook with ONE NEW SONG. Below, you’ll find a list of my favorite albums to come out of 2017 so far. The format is simple: my favorite songs (and favorite lines) from my favorite records of the year have been laid out for you in an organized fashion above a playlist of said songs.

“Shoes (The Sneaker Song)” by Oso Oso from The Yunahon Mixtape

Favorite lyric: “When we sing our song the words never need to rhyme.”

“Year Of The Witch” by Boy Rex from Better Vision

Favorite lyric: “I can hear a heartbeat pounding over thunder. Nobody believes in the spell that I’m under.”

“Wendy’s Trash Can” by Rozwell Kid from Precious Art

Favorite lyric: “I’m on a lightning bolt of cosmic self-expression.”

“Rebel’s Yell” by Super American from Disposable

Favorite lyric: “Past tense says I’ve got the devil on my breath. Never really took the time to learn to tell her that in French.”

“The Louvre” by Lorde from Melodrama

Favorite lyric: “I am your sweetheart, psychopathic crush. Drink up your movements, still can’t get enough. I overthink your punctuation use. Not my fault, just a thing that my mind do.”

“Let’s Get Married” by Bleachers from Gone Now.

Favorite lyric: “I’m gonna get right for you honey; take all of my medicine and spend you all my money.”

“Your Wild Years” by The Menzingers from After The Party

Favorite lyric: “I got drunk in the afternoon with your father in the living room. As the television broke the silence, you smiled. Know that I was doing the best that I can do. A little Irish in your blood. A little Polish in your veins. A little Boston in your attitude. It’s just the way you were raised.”

“Alaska” by Maggie Rogers from Now That Light Is Fading

Favorite lyric: “Cut my hair so I could rock back and forth without thinking of you. Learned to talk and say whatever I wanted too. And I walked off you. And I walked off an old me. Oh me, oh my, I thought it was a dream.”

“No Halo” by Sorority Noise from You’re Not As _____ As You Think

Favorite lyric: “So when you show up to my funeral, will you be wearing white or black? I know the force is in you; it’s the energy I lack. And if there’s a race to heaven, I will surely come in last.”

“50%” by Pet Symmetry from Vision

Favorite lyric: “A firm grasp on the English language. Forever the weight of the guilt on my mind. Depressed with your emotional baggage. I pray for the day you’ll stop wasting my time.”
