Kayak Jones Announce New EP With Emotionally Loaded Lead Single “Memoir”
Just over a year after their debut EP, Drugs, Iowan emo quartet Kayak Jones are back with a new five-song EP entitled Flawed that is set to release on December 9th. Built upon busy lead guitar work and sophisticated drum play, their sophomore EP delivers feel-good verses reminiscent of disbanded Algernon Cadwallader and blended emo/pop choruses that cater to fans of later Transit—reestablishing that emo is very much alive. However, with the continued life of the genre comes the harsh realities of the lyrical content.
With their lead single, “Memoir,” vocalist/guitarist Tyler Zumhof relates to the hardship of losing a loved one.
“When we were on tour recently, we stayed at my cousins house in Alabama and he committed suicide. The rest of his family that lived there essentially left town to escape it all. Regardless, they let us stay in this house and literally everything was left there. His room was left untouched, and I found the suicide letters he wrote; they were like very angry towards society and just so pessimistic towards life. He also suffered from schizophrenia and was hearing voices that weren’t there. This song is an attempt to be in his shoes and trying to understand where he was coming from.”
Kayak Jones returned to Sound and Silence Recordings in Princeton, Illinois, to have their latest effort recorded, mixed, and mastered by Aaron Isaacson earlier this year and are now streaming “Memoir” below.
